About us

Since its launch in 1945, Kobunsha has established itself as a leading firm of publishers in Japan, opening new business fields through the generation of economic development.

Among our various publications, “Kappa Books,” an educational library of nonfiction books first published in 1954, is well-known for winning broad support from the public in the pursuit of clarity. Furthermore, “Kappa Novels,” the library of novels from which a number of groundbreaking bestsellers have appeared, such as Points and Lines by Seicho Matsumoto and Japan Sinks by Sakyo Komatsu, is recognised as one of the outstanding book series in Japan. With an aim towards promoting mystery novels, we established Kobun Foundation in 1994, which has produced many talented writers and awarded the Grand Prize for Best Mystery Novels annually.

As for Magazines, have brought out Josei Jishin (Women’s Self), the earliest weekly magazine focusing on the improving status of women. In addition, we launched JJ, a monthly Japan-centered fashion magazine for women that does not imitate Western culture. Also, Kobunsha has been the pioneer in new markets, producing magazines such as CLASSY., VERY, STORY, and HERS which emphasize the viewpoints of readers. We will continue to expand our business with a great deal of originality.

In February of 2009, Subsidiary Rights Division (Contents Business Division in 2013) was launched to further expand the copyright business, in the regions of Asia such as China and South Korea, as well as Western countries. We have an agreement with Chinese publishers to export magazines such as CLASSY. and STORY. We are also working in the content business such as film adaptations.
